REUTERS/Jim Young/File Photo NEW YORK (Reuters) - Monsanto Co MON.N is winning U.S. appeals against a California jury's landmark $289 million verdict against the company in a case involving the popular weed killer Roundup, but the company is still facing similar cases in other countries. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) sued Monsanto in 2014, claiming the company’s glyphosate-based weed killer Roundup caused cancer. A California jury in August 2018 found Roundup to be a substantial factor in causing an elderly Californian man’s cancer. The case was filed by Edwin Hardeman, a former groundskeeper at the now-defunct utility company Pacific Gas & Electric, who the company said was exposed to Roundup at work. Monsanto has said Roundup is safe and it does not expect the verdict to affect the company’s previously announced plan to reformulate the product and remove glyphosate as an active ingredient by the end of 2019. In California, Monsanto won three of the four appeals that were reviewed. The California Court of Appeals upheld the initial verdict but overturned a $5 million punitive damages award and ordered a new trial on punitive damages.
